I have found the one whom my soul loves. I found you, and you make me more complete. You give strength to my weakness and vision to my dreams. You calm my anxieties and bring structure to my craziness. You are the patience in my frustration and when I’m scared you make me feel safe. You are my loudest supporter and believe in me more than I believe in myself. Every day you surely remind me that I am worthy of a love this special. In every situation, you lead me to Jesus and remind me of His love and mercy. Today I take you to be my best friend, adventure buddy, professional bug killer, big spoon, my beloved, my husband. This day we have waited for since we were teenagers will end in a matter of hours, but these promises I make will be my privileges for a lifetime.
I promise to pray with you and for you every day. I promise to be your best friend- to laugh at your corny jokes, and to stand in line with you when a new star wars movie comes out. I promise to trust you and respect the choices you make for our family. I promise to lift you up when you are weak and admire you when you are strong. I promise to challenge you to be the man God calls you to be, the man I fall in love with every day. I promise I will never keep score, even if I’m totally winning. I promise to use my words and actions to make sure you always feel appreciated and deeply loved. I promise to be patient with you, especially when I’m hungry and you take 20 minutes to make a sandwich. I promise to actively listen to you and to always keep learning from you and about you. I promise to raise our children in a household that glorifies the Lord and I promise they will never doubt the love I have for their father. I promise that when life is crazy and we are spread thin, I will stop, look at you, and remember that you are my safe haven and happy place. I promise I will never pursue you half-heartedly, but always chase after you with the excitement that I have in this moment. I promise I will love you sincerely with everything I have, keeping in mind the love that Christ has for us and striving to love you in the same way. I promise I will never stop updating my vows to you, because these vows should continue to grow in the same way our relationship will.
For today and all of our tomorrows, I promise to choose you. I’ll choose you in the morning when I’m wide awake and you spend a ridiculous amount of time hitting snooze and rubbing your eyes. I’ll choose you at night so we can make midnight runs to McDonald’s for french fries. I’ll choose you on the sunny days when we can roll down the car windows and sing along to our favorite songs. I’ll choose you on the rainy days so we can hold hands and jump through all the puddles. I’ll choose you when I’m sad and want to watch sappy movies, eat chocolate, and cuddle. I’ll choose you when I’m angry and want to be alone- even though I’ll secretly want you to sit next to me and not say anything. I will choose you every day until this life ends, and then I’ll find you in Heaven so we can eternally glorify the One who created us to live this life together.
I remember talking to you for the very first time. I was seventeen. And in that moment, I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I had a chance…“You’re the Obi-Wan for me” and my plethora of other Star Wars puns were bound to only get me so far. But I remember that first night after I got your number when we stayed up talking all night on the phone until my battery died. And just a few weeks after that, somehow we started dating. But in those early December morning hours talking to you outside, pacing in the snow, praying my battery would last so I could discover just one more amazing thing about you, I knew this was something special. That you are something special. Since then, our relationship has been comprised of a handful of hangouts & dates, hundreds of Facetime chats & phone calls, thousands of texts…and maybe like two tweets. Our relationship up until this point may have been primarily long distance, but my heart has always felt at right at home next to yours. And today is the day we finally get to close the gap, and live out our days as close to each other physically as we’ve always felt emotionally.
So first and foremost, I vow to always stay by your side – to be your confidant, the biggest
supporter of your dreams and goals, your shoulder to cry on, and your best friend to quote
random movie lines with while we eat an exorbitant amount of cheese fries. I vow to call you
beautiful about a thousand times a day because that’s just what you are, inside and out. And I vow to tell you that I love you equally as many times because I want to remind you that while you are loved infinitely by God, I would argue that my love still comes at a close second. I vow to do whatever it takes to work through any challenge we may face, to never give up on us. I promise to consistently pursue you as my best friend and as my wife, so as to always demonstrate how deeply I feel for you even as the years pass by. I promise to listen to you, to trust you, to value and treasure you above anyone else. I promise to lead our family in a godly manner, according to how He directs because at the end of all things that is what matters most. I vow to put your needs above my own, to always love you and only you deeply, sacrificially, and with every last ounce of being that I have within me.
From this moment until my final breath, my life, my spirit, and my heart is tied with yours. And whatever comes our way, I vow to face it with you together as your best friend, and now also as your husband. Madisen Leigh, from now until the end, I’m yours.
