“Who would have thought that writing vows would be hard for me? I can bang out an essay in no time, but honestly I worked on the vows since March and just finished them last week. Maybe because with an essay I am only getting a grade, but vows are a way of life.
Our relationship started with a hug in the hallway at high school, a hug that connected our eyes and hearts. It was within that moment where I knew we had a great future ahead of us. And now we are here declaring our commitment to each other in front of our closest friends and family, whom have been a part of our relationship’s ups and downs for seven years, eight months, and fifteen days. Tyler, through the past seven years you made me feel loved, adored, special, and extremely happy. You know how to brighten even the greyest of days. I am blessed to have you as my constant companion and best friend.
As your wife, I promise to treat you like writing, where all the points and supporting details help back up our love story. I promise to cherish the time we spend together, adding more memories to our story. I promise to engage in our life together like I would when reading a good book, reading in-between the lines, examining the intricacies of our work and paying attention to themes, metaphors and symbols.
I promise to stand by you and be your biggest supporter and fan, to celebrate in your accomplishments and the accomplishments of our relationship. I promise to respect you, your ideas and your decisions by listening intently to your reasoning and making sure I understand your thinking. I promise to communicate my ideas, feelings, and decisions to you in an effective way to move our relationship forward, making sure I do not talk around the subject but by getting directly to the point.
I promise to cook you meals and I will try not to make all of the meals from a box, but be creative by using different flavor profiles and textures; using techniques and skills you have patiently taught me. I promise to make you laugh and smile, by doing impressions, mixing up my words, and by doing the little things that will brighten your day. I promise to kiss you when we start our day, when I greet you, and before we go to bed each night.
I promise to forgive you, for you have forgiven me and God has forgiven us. I promise to work on our relationship to help it grow in a positive direction and to continually pray that we always seek God before anything else.
Tyler, our story is one of the most important stories to me. Our story started with you writing ‘I love you’ on my textbook cover because you thought it was sad how I wrote it myself. You wrote ‘I love you’ to me, but you didn’t know you loved me yet. Today, our story progresses, and I am excited for us to start a new chapter with you as husband and wife. Tyler, I make these promises in front of God, family, and friends.
Oh, and Tyler, I LOVE YOU.”
“ I never thought that I would have such a difficult time writing my vows. Everyone knows I’m normally the first person to mention or say something cute, or say a cheesy line from a movie. But actually writing down how much you mean to me was pretty difficult at first.
So here is what I came up with…
You are my best friend and the only person I would ever choose to spend the rest of my life with. Ever since that moment in the hallway during high school when I hugged you and looked into your eyes something happened, I can’t really explain it but it was meant to be. I get that same feeling every time our eyes meet and whenever I hold you close. And I promise to always hold you close, to protect and to take care of you. I’ll make you soup when you’re sick and hold your hand as often as I can. I promise to never put you down but to always encourage you to do your best and to try your hardest. I promise to teach you how to cook so I don’t have to… but I will always be there to teach you all I know. I promise to start our new life together with the foundation of God and I promise to always keep God in our hearts and in everything we do. I promise to cherish you and every moment we have together, from playing cards with the family to waiting and watching you put your make-up on as we get ready for a date. I cherish your smile, your beautiful eyes, and your many laughs.
I promise to honor you as my wife and to hold my head high knowing that I am your guy. I promise to respect you and your heart. I will not put you down, instead I will hold you high and respect your hopes and dreams as they are my own. I promise not to get upset when you correct my grammar, although that what you are probably doing right now…
I promise to love you through the good times and the not so good times. I will always be there for you and for us. Most of all I promise to love you with all of my heart. I always have and always will. I’ll love you day in and day out and every second of every minute of every day.
Ashleigh, the last seven and a half years have been amazing. We’ve had our ups and downs but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. You’ve taught me so much about life and myself. And I love how crazy we act and how we can easily be ourselves around each other. I wouldn’t change a thing if I could. You’re beautiful and smart, kind and gentle, and I love you for that. I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you, it is going to be a great adventure and I am honored, proud, thrilled and delighted I get to spend it with you. I love you forever and always.”
